A Registered Nurse Is Troubled With Her Frightful Depression And Decides To Refrain From Drinking

For the past three years Carolyn has been a RN at a large urban hospital. As a professional nurse, she evidently knew what to tell her patients concerning their health difficulties but in her personal life, nonetheless, she definitely didn't practice what she preached. For instance, she regularly drank quite heavily, she hardly ever exercised, she smoked a pack of cigarettes on a day-to-day basis, and she was around twenty-two pounds overweight.

One day on her way to work, Carolyn got into a car accident. Because the accident was her fault and since her speech was garbled when she spoke, the arresting policewoman administered a breathalyzer test. As per standard police operating procedures, when a person becomes involved in a traffic accident and fails to pass an alcohol test, the person has to spend at least two hours in the county jail.

In fact, Carolyn should have known better than to drive after she was drinking because she recently went to an alcohol abuse awareness class at the hospital that focused on statistics, issues, and information about long term alcohol effects such as the following: DUIs, alcohol poisoning, binge drinking, and the fundamental differences between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

Needless to say, Carolyn felt ashamed of her traffic accident. Moreover, she experienced quite a bit of shame about the fact that the accident was her fault. And perhaps worst of all she was feeling quite a bit of shame about the fact that she was driving while under the influence. As Carolyn contemplated this event, nevertheless, she saw how fortunate she was because down the road her drinking problems could have been a lot worse due to the long term effects of alcohol.

In any case, Carolyn's humiliation about her traffic accident made her reexamine her life and make some remarkable and positive changes. First, she was going to stop drinking in an excessive manner. This would obviously help her steer clear of long term alcohol abuse. Second, she was going to stop smoking. Third, she was going to go on a diet. And fourth, she was going to start exercising.

As upset and depressed as Carolyn was about the total traffic accident situation, she used this distressing experience as a catalyst for healthy change. Moreover, she used her negative experience as a real source of revelation that she had been neglecting her own health while she openly told others how to live a more healthy life. After all had been said and done, she finally saw the pretense in her behavior and decided that she would live her life as a positive example for the patients she saw at the hospital.
