Barry dropped out of high school when he was sixteen years old and eventually got a job at a local office supply manufacturer. For the past three-and-a-half years he has gained a reputation as a hard-working individual who seldom calls off work because of illness.
About nine months ago he began going out with a woman named Carol. They seemed to get along real well right away and gave people the impression that they had a lot of fun together.
When Barry met Carol, he almost never drank. This situation totally changed when Barry and Carol started dating on a fairly normal basis. In fact, their relationship was going fine until Carol unexpectedly called Barry one night roughly 3:30 AM and said that she had to breakup and that she couldn't tell him the reasons for her decision at that moment.
The next morning before he went to work, Barry drove to her condo and immediately discovered that she had already moved out. Barry received this news really hard. In reality, he was stunned because they seemed to be getting along so well.
So what did Barry do? Rather than letting himself go through the grieving process, he began getting inebriated just about every night. It didn't take long for his fellow employees and for his supervisor to see that Barry was coming to work late at least once every week and that he repeatedly called off sick. Furthermore, some of his co-workers made an appointment with staff in the HR Department and stated that Barry again and again came to work with a strong smell of alcohol on his breath or on his clothes.
Barry's supervisor heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Barry's fellow employees. So one Wednesday afternoon he invited Barry into his office. He mentioned to Barry that he had recently noticed a definite change in his sick time, work performance, attendance, and in his behavior.
"Barry, I'm not an authority about alcohol facts and I'm not especially all that knowledgeable about alcoholism facts, but I have personally seen several of my friends and relatives go through some really damaging issues due to their heavy and irresponsible drinking. My recommendation is that you learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol abuse and alcoholism can do to an individual."
"Why is this important? When individuals involve themselves in heavy and abusive drinking, their drinking difficulties not only adversely affect the problem drinker, but they also make a negative impact on her or his co-workers, family, friends, neighbors, and relatives. Barry, in sum, I would like to see you get some help for your heavy and abusive drinking from our employee's assistance program."
Barry respected his supervisor a lot and as a consequence followed through with his suggestion the next work day when he called and made an appointment with someone in the company's employee's assistance program. Although Barry didn't necessarily feel any less depressed or feel better about the sadness he still feels for Carol, he felt some comfort knowing that his manager and his co-workers wanted what's best for him and cared about him. This gave him some emotional relief for the first time in quite a few weeks and he frankly experienced some hope that he would get his life back on track.
